New to therapy?
Not sure what to expect?

Here are a few frequently asked questions and answers to help you on your journey.

What is therapy for?

Therapy and counseling helps people find and pursue harmony in their lives. Everyone has choices. And, everyone has experiences they have no choice in. Life demands the integration of our choices with those changing experiences. One particular skill necessary for integration that is developed through therapy is awareness. Counseling helps you build your personal awareness skills through exploration and discovery, pursuing wholeness and healing along the way.

Who is therapy for? Who benefits from therapy?

Therapy is for anyone and everyone. If you are open to exploration and willing to do the work of exploring your experiences, thoughts, and feelings, you will benefit from therapy. Jason's training as a counselor has prepared him to welcome you as a client, wherever you are in your journey. Whether you are in a current distressing event, have a nagging mental discomfort or hang-up, or simply need guidance and assistance to explore areas of your life, a professional counselor can assist you and your needs.

I haven't done this before. Do I have to lay on the couch? (and other logistics)

Jason's goal is to meet you where you are in your journey. That requires you feeling comfortable and safe, emotionally, mentally, and even physically. Here's what that experience can look like at Jason's practice...

  • Jason has a private office on the 7th floor of the Historic Livestock Exchange building in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, with white noise machines to ensure your privacy.

  • If you arrive a bit early, there are benches in the lobby of the 7th floor where you can wait.

  • Grab a cup of coffee or water as you enter Jason's office.

  • Sit, lay down, put your feet up - whatever makes you most comfortable.

  • On your first visit, Jason will walk you through an Informed Consent (or a Counseling Contract), which lays out what you can expect from him as your counselor. And, during the first session (or first few sessions), you'll also walk through an Intake, helping Jason assess your immediate and long-term needs and understand more about your history.

  • Sessions last 45-50 minutes, and are completely confidential.

  • The fee for each session is $110 for individuals, and $150 for couples.

    • Jason accepts direct payment, or can create a super bill for you to submit to your insurance provider.

    • Reduced rates are available for monthly packages of 2-4 sessions. Contact Jason for details.

What type of therapy is best for me? What is existential therapy (ET)?

Depending on your specific goals and desires in life and for therapy, different approaches (i.e., orientations, specializations) may work better for you. Some counseling approaches were originally developed in response to specific problems (like relational trauma, personality disorders, etc.), and others seek to explore more deeply the entirety of our experiences.

Existential therapy (ET) is concerned with what it takes to live life. Literally, it refers to the study of existing or being. Life is complex involving many different components. Any number of areas can cause us distress or angst. ET seeks to help us explore and identify the areas of life, thoughts, and beliefs that may be involved in our troubles. When we gain more clarity on our anxieties, we can then better understand our options, choices, and our responsibilities to move forward. Ultimately, ET seeks to help us gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of ourselves, others, and our world in order to choose ways to live in harmony with all of these.
